Day 122, Psalm 122

A psalm of ascents to be sung while entering Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. According to wikipedia, Jerusalem has been destroyed at least twice, besieged 23 times, captured and recaptured 44 times, and attacked 52 times. Even today there is conflict and unrest in this holy city.

In Psalm 122, David demonstrates his love for Jerusalem and his people, Israel. Reading his request to pray for peace in Jerusalem has echoed through the many generations that followed him.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you prosper. May there be peace inside your walls and safety in your palaces.” Psalm 122:6-7

One day there will be peace in Jerusalem.

See you tomorrow for psalm 123.

Day 87, Psalm 87

A song written by John Hill Hewitt starts with:

“The home where’er the heart is, Where’er it living treasures dwell;”

These lyrics express what I hear in psalm 87. God’s favorite city is where his heart is, where his living treasures, his people, dwell. The psalmist expresses Jerusalem as the location of God’s affection. He didn’t know how the story would continue – to Bethlehem, to Nazareth and then into our hearts.

Since the Garden of Eden, God has longed to live with his people and dwell with them. We are living in a blessed time. He is always with us and in this psalm, we are considered citizens of his favorite city, Jerusalem. Oh, Emmanuel, Christ within us.

See you tomorrow for Psalm 88
